MARKS OF MARQUES

We have reached the end of another semester. The season is not over yet, but this will be the last issue of the school year. This week’s Marks Of Marques will be a special edition, commemorating iconic and unique moments that we have lived through and remembering the Lakers’ accomplishments this spring and winter.

One thing that stands out in my memory is Tyler Rossini, who excelled in Oswego wrestling, reaching the NCAA Championships. Another moment that stood out to me was in swimming, where the Lakers managed to finish third in both the men’s and women’s SUNYAC Championship and were even named Coaching Staff of the Year for the women’s team. Women’s basketball also surprised me a lot, reaching the semifinals, a considerable improvement compared to last year. Baseball has also been making a strong showing, with numerous victories. Although the season is almost over, Oswego has a good chance of finishing well. In golf, Michael Douglas stood out, finishing first in the Oswego Spring Invite.

Notably, the men’s hockey team achieved a significant milestone, winning the SUNYAC after years of effort. I think it was a massive and vital victory that Ed Gosek achieved, of course not alone, but with the help of the entire team. The team is still young and has a lot to offer, with Matt McQuade and Brandon Cohen, who surprised me. Women’s hockey also made history by reaching the SUNYAC finals for the first time against the Plattsburgh Cardinals, but they were defeated. This was an incredible performance by both seniors Mack Hull and Lexi Levy. The most significant moment was that for the first time in history, we had a double whiteout in the SUNYAC finals.

On the track and in the field, we broke records in several competitions for both men and women. Men’s lacrosse fell in the semifinals at home to Oneonta. However, their season was good and Corey O’Connor stood out for the team, being the top scorer. Even with the defeat, this was a team that gave it their all this year.

I will leave three teams for last that deserve more attention because they have been performing very well this season and do not receive as much attention as other sports.

The men’s tennis team advanced to the Empire 8 semifinals and has had an excellent season this year. Not only has the men’s team had a strong season, but the women’s team has also had the best season in Oswego’s history. And as I always say, remember the names of the women who play tennis for Oswego because they are all freshmen and promise to deliver much more in the upcoming seasons. And last but not least, women’s lacrosse has almost reached the end of an incredible and undefeated season and will now face the difficult task of beating Cortland. I say it is difficult but not impossible, because they have already achieved it this year, breaking a record of 41 games and winning against the Red Dragons for the first time in history.

The teams and programs have consistently improved in quality and are regularly breaking records. If anyone deserves congratulations, it is not only the athletes and coaches, but also Wendy McManus, director of Oswego’s Intercollegiate Athletics, for her good maintenance and choice of coaches this season.

What to expect from Oswego in the upcoming seasons? We will have to wait and see.
