Laker Men’s Hockey Quick Recap: SUNYAC Semifinal Vs Fredonia

The Fredonia Blue Devils upset the top seeded Oswego State Lakers 3-1 in tonight’s SUNYAC playoff semifinal matchup. Fredonia scored two goals in eleven seconds to jump out in front late in the first against the SUNYAC regular season champions. Blue Devil’s goalie Anton Rosen saved 33 shots in net to get the win.

Less than 6 minutes into the first period the game’s first penalty was called on Fredonia’s Kyle Jelinski for elbowing at 5:24 of the first period. Fredonia successfully killed the Lakers first power play opportunity to keep the game tied early.

Oswego State’s Chris MacMillain and Devin Campbell were called for penalties in the first period, but Oswego State killed off both of them to keep the game scoreless. That was until Fredonia’s Josh Biasillo scored the game’s first goal with 2:26 remaining in the first period. Eleven seconds later the Blue Devils scored again to go up 2-0. The second goal was scored by senior Oskar Gerhardson and was unassisted. The Blue Devil’s entered the second period of play with that 2-0 intact.

At 8:30 of the second period, Fredonia’s Colin Valentine was called for tripping to give the Lakers their second power play chance of the night.

With 2:44 remaining in the second period, Kyle Jelinski extended the Blue Devil’s lead with an unassisted goal that put Fredonia up 3-0.

With only 1.7 seconds left in the second period, Fredonia’s Tommy Martin was called for tripping to give the Lakers a power play opportunity to start the third period.

The Lakers failed to score on that power play, but were given another chance just minutes later when Victor Tracy was called for elbowing. Oswego State finally capitalized on the power play when Mitch Emerson found the back of the net on assists by Josh Zizek and captain Mitch Herlihey. Emerson’s goal was scored at 4:26 of the third period and trimmed the Blue Devil lead to 3-1.

The Lakers were back on the man advantage with 6:48 left in regulation when Sam Wilbur was sent to the box for hooking. Fifteen seconds later the Lakers commited a penalty of their own when Josh Zizek was called for tripping. Both sides played four men for the next 1:45, but neither team scored and each side returned to full strength.

The Lakers called a timeout with 2:56 in regulation as they trailed 3-1 at that point. Oswego State goalie David Richer was pulled with less than 2 minutes left in the game to give the Lakers a shot at a late comeback attempt. That comeback attempt failed as Fredonia managed to hang on and win the game 3-1 to advance to the SUNYAC Championship game next weekend and in the process, eliminate the top seeded Lakers.
