No holidays from realities of life, responsibility

This coming weekend is everyone’s favorite costumed holiday, Halloween. Like every other weekend, students are going to drink, some too much. Because of the holiday, most will drink too much.

It’s not a surprise that most of my colleagues and I will be out having a great, but watching others drink irresponsibly might ruin certain events. Their excuse will be “It’s Halloween,” which is just as good of an excuse on any holiday. Not.

I understand that people are going to get drunk. Some get drunk every weekend and some every night, because they feel that is what college is all about. College is about learning what kind of a person you are and what you’re made of, not how much booze you can put away.

The costumed shenanigans are going to be a little more reckless than usual, but hopefully when they get to that point, the people under the sheets and masks will chill out for the rest of the night. Like many, I’m not looking for a fight any weekend – especially this one. Who knows how many more brawls than usual are going to emerge when Saturday is all said and done.

Besides the fights, another issue is the people who are going to drink way too much, enough to the point of a near-death experience. There have already been a large number of SAVAC calls made during this semester. In fact, the allowed amount of allowed alcoholic beverages has been limited to more than half of what it was last year and that still hasn’t slowed students down from getting too plastered. The number of weekend SAVAC calls can potentially double on a holiday due to the lame “holiday” excuse everyone seems to come up with. If it does double this weekend, it’s only a matter of time before the campus thinks about reducing alcohol limits even further by going dry, something no college student wants to see.

In a nutshell, Oswegonians need to think a little harder before they go out and party. The book of drunk excuses is pretty thin to begin with and the “Halloween” excuse is one of the more worn pages that lie in it. I’m not against going out and having a few cold ones with some mates, but for the sake of health and self-awareness, please be responsible and watch out for others.
