Junior Jeff Boeckl scores Athlete of the Week with a round of 78 at Elmira Invitational

The Oswego State men’s golf team benefited greatly this weekend for having junior Jeff Boeckl on the team.

Boeckl lit up the green on this past Sunday, Sept. 27, finishing the Elmira Golf Invitational in sixth place for individual scoring with an incredible score of 78. He also helped lead the team to a fourth place finish at the invitational.

Many would be very satisfied with this accomplishment, especially when it was the lowest they had ever shot in competition. Boeckl is always looking to better himself though. “I know I can shoot lower,” Boeckl said confidently.

Boeckl grew up in Gathersburg, Maryland and went to high school at Quince Orchard where he began to play golf as a junior. He picked up golf while working at a driving range over a few summers, becoming friends with most of the pros there. They showed him some things, but for the most part he created his own game.

Boeckl wasn’t only a golfer in high school though. He played tennis all four years and would have tried out had it not been for golf season running in the fall and spring. In high school he was quite the golfer, making it to the state finals as a senior, but unfortunately not making the cut. He also received the Cougar Award for being one of the key team players. Boeckl even shot an entire round of 18 holes with a seven iron just for fun.

Boeckl is very involved at Oswego State. Not only is he a meteorology major, but he also is one of the leaders of the golf team and vice president of the fraternity Delta Sigma Phi. When asked about the team this year, Boeckl said, “we’re a young team with no seniors and four freshman on the team and we need some leadership.” According to Boeckl, he and fellow teammate Pat Davidow have been showing the new guys the ropes. With only two more tournaments left in the season, the ECAC championship and the Hamilton College tournament, Boeckl feels that it will be good for the new guys to get some experience.
