Google remains front-runner to replace current Sun Java server

As soon as fall 2010, Oswego State students could be checking mail and receiving status updates via a somewhat “lighter” campus e-mail system. The Campus Technology Advisory Board (CTAB) has made the decision to host the college’s e-mail client in the “clouds” by means of Google’s popular e-mail service, Campus Techology Services Chief Operating Officer Joseph Moreau said.

As lottery comes to a finish, ResLife battles software problems, empty rooms

Limited interest in six-person housing in The Village and problems with the lottery system used to place students caused minor problems with the selection process earlier this week. A technical problem with the software used to generate lottery numbers needed for The Village housing selection slowed the process last Friday and Monday, said Rick Kolenda, director of Residence Life and Housing.

Committee moves forward in search for S.C.M.A. dean

Oswego State’s School of Communication, Media and the Arts (SCMA) Interim Dean Fritz Messere has been named a finalist in Ithaca College’s search for dean of the Roy H. Park School of Communications. Messere is one of three finalists for the dean position at Ithaca College.

Campus Center rooms renumbered

Three years after its official completion, the Campus Center is going through some growing pains as it undergoes a complete room renumbering and several aesthetic changes this semester and into the summer. Effective immediately, all Campus Center departments and organizations are being asked to comply with the new numbering system by changing e-mail, mail and online correspondence.

College named to community honor roll

The engagement of Oswego State’s students in the community and professors’ use of service learning in classes have again earned the college recognition on the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll. The Corporation for National and Community Service bills the honor roll as “the highest federal recognition a college or university can receive for its commitment to volunteering, service learning and civic engagement.

Committee looks to centralize stance on academic dishonesty

The Oswego State committee in charge of plagiarism has begun a search to form a centralized way to handle cheating on campus. The committee is looking for a way to provide faculty with the tools to prevent it from happening. “One charge was to review the existing policy and do some cleaning up and the other charge was to try to provide guidance to faculty so that there would be a more consistent approach to handling issues of academic misconduct across the campus,” said David Bozak, chair of the Intellectual Integrity Committee.

Metro Center looks to increase enrollment, programs offered

Oswego State’s home away from home continues to see surge in popularity for those who cannot commute

Graduate school classes are being held at the Metro Center in Syracuse due to the location and proximity to a majority of the students, which causes some distress for those students closer to campus. The Metro Center opened in May 2007 and has had steadily growing enrollment since its “course to connect” program which offered first-time graduate students that were not enrolled a chance to take one free graduate course.

U.P. to look into Rave Guardian’s effectiveness on campus

$15,000 and less than 500 students utilizing the program, U.P. considers ways to bump usage

The Rave Guardian program is receiving a second look as data shows that as few as 300 to 500 students may be utilizing the safety initiative, which replaced the campus’s iconic blue lights. According to Oswego State University Police (UP) the system is costing $15,000.

Honor society teams up with middle school to help youths

The Oswego circle of Omicron Delta Kappa, the National Leadership Honor Society, has partnered with the Oswego Middle School in hopes of lighting some inspiration in a group of at-risk eighth graders. The project, titled “Take the Lead—Strengths, Leadership, and Teamwork,” places ODK members with 19 students as they work to increase the youths’ understanding of their strengths, motivate them in the classroom and demonstrate to them the value of giving back to those in the community.
