Play-in games complete; quarterfinal round Saturday

Wednesday signaled the beginning of the NCAA Division III Men's Ice Hockey Championship with two West play-in games and one East play-in game. In the East region, ninth-ranked Elmira College (20-8-1 overall) defeated ECAC Northeast champion Curry, 4-1, at Murray Athletic Center in Elmira, N.Y. Elmira's Darcy Vaillancourt scored two power-play goals and goaltender Casey Tuttle stopped 21 shots to eliminate Curry (19-9-1 overall) from the tournament. The Soaring Eagles advanced to the quarterfinal round where they will travel to Northfield, Vt. to play the top-ranked Norwich Cadets on Saturday, March 13. Oswego State senior forward and assistant captain Neil Musselwhite has been voted into the fifth annual NCAA Frozen Four Skills Challenge on Friday, April 9 at Ford Field in Detroit, Mich. Musselwhite is the only Division III player to be voted into the skills challenge and will represent the East squad in the faster skater competition. Musselwhite is one of the six men's positional players on the 16 players roster. Each squad consists of six male position players, six female position players, two male goaltenders and two female goaltenders. This season, Musselwhite has amassed 31 points on 18 goals and 13 assists. Musselwhite's 18 goals is third most on the team and his 31 points is fifth most. For the third consecutive week, the Oswego State men's ice hockey team are the second best team in the nation, garnering the number two ranking in the final USCHO.com Division III Men's poll. The Lakers finished off an impressive year in the SUNYAC by defeating archrival SUNY Plattsburgh in the SUNYAC championship on Saturday night. The win completed a three game sweep of the Cardinals. Oswego State received a first-round bye in the NCAA tournament and will face Bowdoin College, ranked sixth in the nation, on Saturday, March 13 at the Campus Center Ice Arena. The NCAA revealed the 11 team bracket for the 2010 NCAA D-III Championship Sunday evening hours after the final tournament championship game was played. The tournament begins Wednesday, March 10 with three play-in games. Five teams, including Oswego State, received first round byes to the quarterfinals and will play on Saturday, March 13. The Lakers (25-2-0 overall), champions of the SUNYAC, received a Pool A (automatic) bid after defeating archrival SUNY Plattsburgh, 6-3, for the third time this season. Oswego State will play Bowdoin College (19-6-1 overall) on Saturday at the Campus Center Ice Arena. The Lakers are 16-0-0 at home this season and the Polar Bears are 5-3-1 on the road. For the first time since 2003, the Oswego State men’s ice hockey team are SUNYAC champions after defeating archrival SUNY Plattsburgh, 6-3, in the SUNYAC final at a sold-out Campus Center Ice Arena on Saturday night. The Lakers received goals from six different players as Oswego State earned an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament and denied the Cardinals the opportunity to three-peat as SUNYAC champions.
