Laker hockey season review

    St. Norbert's Cody Keefer ended the Oswego State men's ice hockey team's season on a goal with 39 seconds remaining in the NCAA semifinals to send the Green Knights to the title game and the Lakers home.     Despite the semi-final loss, the Lakers have had a memorable season after losing 13 seniors a year ago. Oswego State finished with a 26-3-0 overall record and spent a majority of the season a top the USCHO.com men's ice hockey poll.     The Lakers nearly ran the table in the SUNYAC, finishing 15-1-0 after losing to SUNY Geneseo in their SUNYAC finale.     A costly turnover in their defensive zone brought the second-ranked Oswego State men's ice hockey team's season to an end in the NCAA semi-final in Lake Placid, N.Y. on Friday.     St.Norbert's freshman forward Cody Keefer stole the puck from junior defenseman Stephen Mallaro and beat goalie Kyle Gunn-Taylor on the breakaway with 39 seconds remaining to send the third-ranked Green Knights to the NCAA Championship game, defeating the Lakers 4-3 in front of mostly Oswego State fan base.     Keefer's 13th goal of the season was by far the biggest of his young career, as he was mobbed by his teammates along the far side boards. Frozen Four match-ups set

    At the beginning of the year it was a goal that just about every team set out to achieve: win their way to Lake Placid. After a long season, four teams accomplished that goal. #1 Norwich University, #2 Oswego State, #3 St. Norbert and #5 Plattsburgh each punched their ticket to Lake Placid after winning their respective NCAA quarterfinal round game.     In the only game featuring teams from the West division, St. Norbert defeated #7 Gustavus Adolphus, 3-1, at the Cornerstone Community Center in De Pere, Wis. St. Norbert's Shane Wheeler tallied a goal and an assist in front of a home crowd of 1,717 on Saturday night.     Playing his final game as a Laker in the Campus Center Ice Arena, senior forward and assistant captain Neil Musselwhite scored four goals and added an assist, as the second-ranked Oswego State men's ice hockey team defeated sixth-ranked Bowdoin College, 9-2, Saturday night in the quarterfinal round of the NCAA tournament.     With the win, the Lakers punch their ticket to Lake Placid for the Division III Frozen Four where they will play third-ranked St. Norbert on Friday, March 19.     Wednesday signaled the beginning of the NCAA Division III Men's Ice Hockey Championship with two West play-in games and one East play-in game.     In the East region, ninth-ranked Elmira College (20-8-1 overall) defeated ECAC Northeast champion Curry, 4-1, at Murray Athletic Center in Elmira, N.Y. Elmira's Darcy Vaillancourt scored two power-play goals and goaltender Casey Tuttle stopped 21 shots to eliminate Curry (19-9-1 overall) from the tournament.
