The Oswego women’s hockey team will look to complete a weekend sweep as they take on the SUNY Cortland Red Dragons in the second game of a back-to-back.  The Lakers have a 5-0-0 record overall going into today’s matchup. The Red Dragons will look to bounce back today after last nights 2-1 loss handed to them by Oswego State. Cortland goes into today’s matchup with a 0-3-0 record overall as they look to get there first win of the season.

Last Night’s Game

Last night Oswego State handily defeated SUNY Cortland 2-1. Jacquelin White scored both goals for the Lakers in a matchup that was mostly dominated by Oswego State especially at the end where Cortland could not generate a lot of offensive chances. It was definitely one of those games where the final score was deceiving. The Lakers could have had a better start to the game as it was pretty even in the first period. Then Oswego State generated more scoring chances and the Lakers really picked up their game from the second period onwards. The Lakers managed to get 44 shots on goal, which really speaks to how good Cortland goaltender Rachel Farmer was. The freshman was terrific in net and frustrated Oswego State last night. Cortland had only 12 shots on goal as Mariah Madrigal had a relatively easy day in net. Cortland will be determined to make her job harder in Today’s matchup.

By the Numbers

So far this season, Oswego State is playing well on special teams having a pretty good power play that is 6/22 and generating many scoring chances. They also have a stout penalty kill that has killed 19/21 opposing power plays. For SUNY Cortland their special teams have been far less efficient. They are 1/12 on the power-play and have killed only 9/14 power-plays as their penalty kill as has been sketchy so far this season.

Players to watch

Oswego State Lakers-  Jacquelin White

Jacquelin White is off to a great start in her Laker career as the freshman is looking like the go to goal scorer on the team. She already has six goals including the two she had yesterday. If she keeps it up she will become one of the most if not the most prolific goal scorer in the conference. Yesterday she proved she can score goals in clutch moments as well. With the game tied she scored the goal that put the Lakers up by one getting what was eventually the game winning goal. Look for her to continue her torrid pace today.

Cortland Red Dragons- Sydney Carlucci

The senior is currently leading the team in points and looks to continue playing a strong brand of hockey. She was one of the top goals scorers on her team last year and looks to do the same this year.

Game Prediction

The Lakers looked dominant yesterday, despite only finding the back of the net twice, and could have easily have won that game 5-0 or so. I look to see that same domination today and this time I think the pucks will reach the back of the net more often. I think that the Lakers will win today 5-1 and will continue their hot start to the season improving to 6-0-0.
