Oswego bounces back with a win against St. John’s

Oswego State defeated St. John’s University Saturday afternoon in a Div. III non-conference matchup at the Radisson Thanksgiving Showcase, getting its first win of the weekend by a score of 2-0.

Shawn Hulshof scored the first goal of the game in the second period, when he took a deep one-timer on a pass from Stephen Johnson, his fourth goal of the season. David Ferreira would tack on another goal in the third off of a rebound, giving his team a two-goal lead.

Matt Zawadzki returned to the net after sitting out the last four games and blocked all 24 shots he faced. Last year’s second team All-SUNYAC goalie looks to take control of the starting role for the rest of the season.

The Lakers were especially successful on the penalty kill, not allowing a single goal on all six power plays St. John’s had.

A scary moment happened late in the third period when sophomore forward Mitchell Herlihey blocked a shot with his leg and went down on the ice. Herlihey was unable to get up under his own power and did not return for the third period.

The Lakers finish 1-1-0 on the weekend and St. John’s goes 0-0-2.

Oswego’s next game will be Dec. 4 against Buffalo State, in Oswego at the Marano Campus Center Ice Arena. Puck drop will be at 7 pm.
