Roetzer scores Athlete of Week honors for game against Elmira

Brittany Roetzer

For the second time this year, an Oswego State field hockey player has been chosen as Athlete of the Week. The honor went to junior forward Brittany Roetzer.

Roetzer, a business administration major, has had many achievements in her career as an Oswego State field hockey player. Throughout her high school career, she received many awards for her athletic talent, but she didn’t receive what she considers her greatest achievement until her freshman year at Oswego State.

This award was earning second team All-SUNYAC honors. While winning All-SUNYAC is her greatest achievement, her proudest moment in her field hockey career at Oswego State is scoring on William Smith College.

"I had a lot of revenge during that game, because the previous year one of their girls came up from behind, tripped me and made me break my collar bone," Roetzer said. "Even though we did not win that game, one of the senior girls’ mom came up to me as I was walking off the field and said ‘I need to hug you because I have not seen Oswego State score against William Smith in over four years.’"

Roetzer has had a lot to be proud of this year as well. She led Oswego State’s field hockey team to its fifth win of the season with two goals and one assist against Elmira College. Six minutes into the second half of the game Roetzer scored the game-winning goal that gave the field hockey team its highest win total since 2002. Roetzer leads the team with five goals and is second in scoring with 11 points.

Roetzer’s future goals are to finish her career at Oswego State and try to have another winning season next year. Roetzer is impressed with the progress that the field hockey team has made in her time as a Laker.

"We have really come out of a slump this year, and I think coach Ostrander and all players have worked extremely hard to rebuild this program and make it strong again," Roetzer said. "I am excited to see where it is headed for next season."

The field hockey team has a 6-8 overall record this year. The team’s next game is Saturday, Oct. 24 against Ithaca College at 1:00 p.m.
